There is a particular kind of magic in an old map, and this one, printed in Paris sometime in the eighteenth century, holds it in abundance. Titled in French, Ierusalem Comme elle est a present, Jerusalem as it is at present, the hand-colored engraving invites the eye to drift across a holy city seen not from the ground but from above and to the side, a bird suspended over the eastern approach. It is a view meant to make the distant feel suddenly near, to carry a Parisian viewer across seas and centuries to the hills of Jerusalem without their ever leaving home.
