At the top of the world, where the map surrenders to ice and sky, the Yamal Peninsula stretches across the Russian Arctic like a living canvas of extremes. At seventy degrees north, the summer sun refuses to set, spilling endless gold across the tundra before the season turns and the horizon dissolves into the long, pale grays of winter. This is a treeless country, vast and unbending, yet it is far more than remote wilderness. Yamal is a crossroads of history, culture, and survival, a place where an indigenous people have read the language of the land for thousands of years. Among them are the Nenets, whose lives move in step with the great reindeer herds they follow across the frozen frontier.

Theirs is an intricate choreography of adaptation. To the Nenets, the reindeer are no mere livestock but sacred providers, sustaining every thread of existence. Each year, herding families travel more than twelve hundred and fifty miles, tracing ancient seasonal routes from the southern marshlands to the northern shores of the Arctic Ocean. The rhythm of their days pulses with the journeying animals, gathering them in the biting wind, carving ice for water, hunting where they must. Even their tongue carries countless words for the traits of a single reindeer, a living testament to a bond forged over centuries.

Survival here is a symphony of ingenuity. Against storms and a cold that plunges to sixty degrees below zero, the Nenets raise portable chum tents, conical frames wrapped in layers of hide, and dress in boots, jackets, and gloves cut from the same generous animal. Every seam holds a story, stitching present generations to an ancestral past.

The tundra itself feels otherworldly and alive. Permafrost interlaces with winding rivers, sprawling wetlands, and shimmering lakes where migratory birds arrive each summer to break the eerie stillness with a fleeting burst of life. The seasons transform everything, luminous auroras dancing over sun-drenched days, deep winter cloaking the world in a profound and stirring silence. It is an ecosystem both delicate and formidable, home to the endangered Siberian reindeer, vulnerable polar bears, and the ancient Nenets culture.

Yet reverence, not extraction, defines this relationship. The Nenets care for orphaned reindeer as family, recognizing individual animals among herds numbering in the thousands. Some are deemed sacred and never killed, their survival a spiritual bond to the land that echoes through every ritual and gesture. Descended from the Northern Samoyeds nearly a millennium ago, the Nenets speak dialects shaped by this unforgiving geography, and they have defied the erasures of time, carrying their ancient practices into a shifting world.

Beyond sustenance lies an interwoven beauty, a child laughing in the glow of an aurora, the precision of a handmade sledge harness, the haunting cadence of a song borne on the wind. Yamal is more than a peninsula. It is an epic, as wild and enduring as the Arctic itself.

Through her eyes, we glimpse the child laughing in the aurora’s glow, the herder braced against the wind, and the sacred herds that move like rivers across the ice.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the city of Lucknow shimmered like a jewel upon the plains of northern India. It was the beating heart of Awadh, a kingdom whose court was celebrated across the subcontinent for its riches and its splendour, its domes rising pale and luminous against wide skies, its gardens threaded with quiet pathways. Within its palace walls lived Malika Kishwar, the Queen Mother of Awadh, mother to Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last king of that storied land. She had spent her entire life in strict purdah, unseen by the world, her days unfolding behind veils and screens.

Then, in 1856, the fragile peace shattered. On the eleventh of February, the British annexed Awadh, accusing the Nawab of maladministration. Wajid Ali Shah refused to sign the treaty that would surrender his throne, yet he possessed no army to resist. He chose instead the slow and delicate weapon of diplomacy, hoping to appeal directly to Queen Victoria herself. He set out from Lucknow toward Calcutta, but the long river journey left him gravely ill. And so a remarkable decision was made. His mother, along with his brother and his son, would sail to England in his place.

It was unthinkable. A woman who had never been glimpsed by strangers would now cross continents to plead for her son’s kingdom. Yet she chose to go. In June 1856, the royal party departed Calcutta, accompanied by nine maids, one hundred and ten attendants, several bodyguards, and seven eunuchs. They reached Southampton on the twenty-first of August, and their arrival caused a sensation, the British press trailing the entourage with fascination. Even boarding a train became an ordeal, for no one could be permitted to see her. When station authorities refused to close the platform, her servants improvised, forming a human corridor of calico sheets held aloft between her carriage and the train, a scene so extraordinary that illustrators captured it for the papers.

Reaching London was only half the struggle. For nearly eleven months she waited, until at last, on the fourth of July 1857, she met Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace. But by then the world had shifted beneath her feet. Back in India, the great Uprising of 1857 had erupted, and Awadh had become one of its fiercest centres. Her daughter-in-law, Begum Hazrat Mahal, was leading the resistance in Lucknow, while Wajid Ali Shah sat under arrest in Calcutta. The mission had collapsed. There was nothing left to negotiate.

After nearly two years abroad, the delegation turned homeward. She had travelled thousands of miles to save Awadh, and she was returning with nothing. She reached Paris on the twenty-third of January 1858, and the very next morning the ailing Queen Mother died. She was laid to rest in the Muslim section of Père Lachaise Cemetery, her grave slowly surrendering to neglect and time. She had stepped from behind the veil to save her son, and instead died far from home, alone, her story now known to almost no one.

There is a signboard in Okhla, on the eastern edge of Delhi, that most travelers pass without a second glance. It reads “Sarai Julena Gaon,” and it is nearly all that remains, in stone and name, of a woman whose life once stretched like a golden thread between two of the mightiest powers the world had ever known. Her name was Juliana Dias da Costa, and to wander the dusty lanes that still murmur her memory is to step into a story so layered with fantasy and fragment that scholars have chased it across six languages and three centuries, through more than a hundred archival documents in Portuguese alone, and still more in Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, English, Dutch, French, Italian and German. She is a mystery pressed between the pages of empires, a legendary European lady and a Mughal prince, remembered in the very shape of a saga.

She was, we know for certain, of Portuguese descent, a Christian woman who moved through the marble courts of the Mughal emperors with a grace that startled everyone who set eyes upon her. She surfaces for the very first time as Juliana Dias da Costa in a Portuguese document sleeping in the oldest Historical Archives of Asia, in Goa, a single name rising from the deep well of the past. In Persian she appears only as a favourite of Bahadur Shah in the Tarikh-i-Muhammadi, but her true story unfolded beside Prince Shah Alam, the son of Aurangzeb who would rise to become Bahadur Shah the First. For more than forty-five years her fortunes were bound to his, and legend holds that she served him faithfully through seven long years of imprisonment, at the greatest peril to her own life, while the gruesome and bloodiest wars for the Peacock Throne thundered around them.

Her ascent was nothing short of phenomenal. In an age of intrigue she rose to the very summit of the richest court on earth, gathering titles and roles that would have seemed impossible for any woman, let alone a European Christian in a Mughal world. She was tutor to the princes and princesses, physician to the royal ladies, and Charge de Affairs of the harem, the royal table and the jewellery. She was a Jagirdar and a Mansabdar, an employer, a diplomat, and a Portuguese Ambassador. The court gave her many names, calling her Dona and Khanum, Madame de Maintenon and the Oracle of the Emperor, yet to the people she remained simply Bibi Julena. She lived in the finest mansion of the age, the very house once belonging to the doomed prince Dara Shikoh, and held a hoard of jewels and a Jagir of four villages in the vicinity of Delhi, with another, Manori, resting near distant Bombay.

It was through Juliana that the Estado da Índia, its influence quietly ebbing away like a receding tide, still found a living voice within a court where its own officials could no longer tread. When the Dutch Embassy arrived, it was she who received them with the strictest royal etiquette, customs and manners, and she who arranged a special concert of Dutch musicians whose violin, harp and hautboy charmed the Emperor and his queens, and the princes and the Amirs after them. The gifts that changed hands ran to over rupees thirty crores, and for her own people she secured a prize beyond price, the richest port of Surat, granted duty-free to the Portuguese.

The Portuguese crown did not forget her. Ennobled by the Mughal Emperor, she was honoured too by the Portuguese King, who granted her the highest distinction of nobility, the Habit of Christ, while the Pope himself blessed her grand services to Christianity. She was patroness of the Jesuit missions and mother, in spirit, to the Society of Jesus, benefactress of the College and Mission at Agra, and financier of the Jesuit mission sent across the high mountains to Tibet. In 1711 she set down her own hand in Persian, in a letter later rendered into Portuguese, praying for the glory of King João the Fifth and acknowledging the gifts that flowed between the Estado and the Mughal court. It is perhaps the only surviving whisper of her own voice, a single fragment among the many gathered from the past.

Yet for all her jewels and mansions, her villages and her titles, she is said to have remained down to earth in her manner of living. Her social welfare left behind a church and a sarai in Delhi, quiet monuments to a woman who bridged worlds. And when at last she longed to withdraw to the Santa Monica convent in Goa, the court, unwilling to lose her, pressed her to remain. Perhaps, in the end, she won her wish, and the Portuguese shore reclaimed her, drawing home at last the woman it had lent to history, a charismatic figure lost, for so long, in the mist of time.

On the morning of April 8, 1782, dawn broke gold across the sheltered mouth of Delaware Bay, and a twenty-three-year-old lieutenant named Joshua Barney turned his lone sloop to face three approaching British warships. Above his deck, catching the first light, gleamed a name carried across oceans from a kingdom he would never see: the Hyder-Ally. It was a strange and wondrous thing, that a small hundred-ton merchantman, refitted with sixteen six-pounder guns to guard the commerce of Philadelphia, should bear the name of a Muslim sultan ruling the hills of southern India, half a world away.

The name belonged to Haidar Ali, the formidable ruler of Mysore, whose gunpowder rockets had scorched the reputation of the British East India Company. In September 1780, at the Battle of Pollilur, Haidar Ali and his warrior son Tipu Sultan humbled British arms so thoroughly that the echo of it rolled across the Atlantic. To colonists rising against the same empire, Haidar Ali became a distant hero, linked to America through a shared ally in France. When Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at Yorktown in October 1781, a celebration nine days later at Trenton, New Jersey, raised thirteen toasts amid the thunder of artillery, one of them lifted to “the great and heroic Hyder Ali, raised up by Providence to avenge the numberless cruelties perpetrated by the English.”

So it was that when Pennsylvania fitted out that sloop, they christened her for the eastern prince. To fill her decks, Barney turned to a recruiting poem by Philip Freneau, its verses summoning young men to sail “in the Hyder Ali privateer,” a ship named for a ruler “who, smit with freedom’s sacred flame, usurping Britons brought to shame.” Within an astonishing fourteen days, Barney had recruited and trained roughly a hundred and ten men and readied the ship for war.

The battle that followed became legend. Ordering his merchant convoy to flee up the shallow channel, Barney held his fire until the eighteen-gun General Monk drew close, then bellowed a false command by “the rule of the contrary” that sent the British ship tangling helplessly into his rigging. For twenty-six blistering minutes the two vessels traded broadsides at pistol range, grapeshot shrieking through canvas and cordage. When the smoke cleared, the General Monk had struck her colors, having lost twenty men killed and thirty-three wounded, including nearly every officer aboard, while the Hyder-Ally counted four dead. Philadelphia erupted in ballads sung through the streets, and the Legislature awarded Barney a gold-hilted sword bearing images of both ships.

The bonds ran deeper than a christening, for Tipu Sultan himself, upon hearing of the Declaration of Independence, wrote that “every blow that is struck in the cause of American liberty throughout the world, in France, India, and elsewhere... the struggle shall continue.” A painting of the Hyder-Ally’s triumph, commissioned by Barney in Paris, hangs still at Annapolis, a quiet witness to the day an Indian king’s name blazed brightest upon American seas.

Fath-Ali Shah Qajar sits at the center of this 19th-century Qajar-era Persian painting, and everything in the frame was placed there on purpose. The long black bifurcated beard. The jeweled crown. The court attendants arranged around him like a carefully rehearsed ceremony. None of it was decoration, it was all political language, and it said one thing plainly: power lives here.

Fath-Ali Shah (r. 1797–1834), the second ruler of the Qajar dynasty, understood that a portrait could do more than capture a face. It could build an empire’s image. Court painters like Mihr ‘Ali produced whole cycles of these portraits, some of them close to 183 x 156 cm on canvas, sent abroad as diplomatic gifts at a time when Britain, France, and tsarist Russia were all circling Iran with very clear intentions.

But this particular painting carries something softer underneath all that ceremony. Down below the throne, a romantic pastoral scene unfolds, two figures most likely lovers, the kind who appear in old Persian poems. Ceremonial portraits for palace walls on one side, tender garden scenes for private rooms on the other. This painting holds both in one frame without needing to explain itself.

If you’re looking at Qajar court paintings for the first time, pay attention to what’s not centered. Those quieter details are usually where the real story sits.

The heat shimmers over the grasslands of sixteenth-century Hindustan, and the air carries the low, insistent pulse of drums. Across the open plain a procession moves, kicking up a fine golden dust that hangs and glitters in the sun, and at its very heart, swaying gently on the shoulders of servants, comes a palanquin. This pole-borne sedan chair is the sort of conveyance ordinarily reserved for princes and ministers, for men of rank whose feet are thought too precious to touch common ground. Yet the figure riding within it now is no minister at all. It is a cat. A cheetah reclines there in state, its sleek body dappled with dark spots, its amber gaze sweeping across the passing country with the serene detachment of royalty, while the drums beat before it to announce its coming. This was no everyday sight, and yet neither was it rare in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar, a ruler who loved the cheetah as perhaps no sovereign in all of history ever has, and who lifted these swift and elegant creatures into a place in his world scarcely distinguishable from that of his own courtiers.

The scale of that devotion almost defies belief. Across a reign that stretched from 1556 to 1605, Akbar gathered a staggering nine thousand of these cats, and at any single moment his establishment might hold as many as a thousand of them, a living treasury of speed and grace assembled beneath one imperial roof. We know this because his court historian, Abu’l Fazl, recorded the emperor’s fascination again and again in the pages of the Akbarnama and its companion volume, the Ain-i-Akbari, those great chronicles from which the Indian historian Divyabhanusinh would later draw for his 1995 study, The End of a Trail: The Cheetah in India. The passion took hold early. Akbar’s very first cheetah arrived as a gift in 1555, soon after he came to Hindustan, and from that moment the fascination never once loosened its grip. He sorted his thousands of cats into eight distinct classes, and rather than treating them as interchangeable instruments of the chase, he gave each one a name and assigned it a rank, as though every animal were an officer of his court, waiting quietly in the wings for its turn to serve.

Yet behind all this ceremony lay a stubborn and vexing problem, one that shaped everything about the way the Mughals kept their cheetahs. The animals simply would not breed in captivity. Akbar’s own son and successor, the emperor Jahangir, set the matter down plainly in his memoirs, observing that it was by then an established fact that cheetahs, held in unfamiliar places, would not pair off with a female. This single quirk of nature carried enormous consequences, for it meant that every last cheetah in the imperial establishment, all nine thousand of them across the long years of Akbar’s reign, had to be taken from the wild, drawn out of the open country where each had first learned to run. And even the catching demanded uncommon skill and a fine sense of timing from the shikaris, the huntsmen who caught and trained them. A cheetah could not simply be snatched as a helpless cub and raised by human hands, for taken too young it proved useless for the hunt, having never learned from its own mother the hard and intricate craft of the kill, the closing of the final distance, the pulling down of fleet and frightened prey. The animal had to be schooled by nature before any human trainer could hope to refine it, its wildness the very thing that made it worth the taking.

So intense grew the demand for wild cheetahs that entire districts, famous across the land for the numbers that roamed them, were set aside as royal capture grounds, and their names still fall like a litany of the hunt across the map of northern India, Jodhpur and Jhunjhunu among the deserts of Rajasthan, Bathinda in the Punjab, Hisar out on the plains of Haryana. It was to the sheer practical difficulty of the capture itself that Akbar turned his restless and inventive mind, and the solution credited to him tells us as much about the character of the man as about the sharpness of his cleverness. Hunters before him had dug deep pits into which a racing cat would tumble, all too often breaking its slender legs in the sudden violence of the fall. Akbar imagined something gentler and far more ingenious, a shallow pit fitted with an automatic trap door that swung quietly shut behind the animal the very instant it dropped inside. The brilliance of the thing lay entirely in its restraint. There was no long and bone-shattering plunge, no injured beast to be nursed painfully back over months, only a cheetah sealed in whole and unharmed, ready to be gentled and trained rather than mended. And there is something quietly astonishing in the picture of it, an emperor at the very summit of his power stooping to consider the exact depth of a hole in the ground, all so that a wild creature might be spared a broken leg. In that small mercy we glimpse the peculiar tenderness that ran, unexpected and unmistakable, beneath the whole Mughal love of the chase.

All of this care, all of this ingenuity, found its reward at last in a single unforgettable moment, one that Abu’l Fazl thought worthy of preserving forever in the pages of the Ain-i-Akbari. It concerns the emperor’s most cherished cheetah of all, a cat whose very name, Chitr Najan, proclaimed its glory. Picture the scene as the chronicle hands it down to us. The hunt is spread wide across the open country, the emperor mounted and watching, the air taut with anticipation as the cats are slipped loose after a herd of blackbuck, those fleet antelope whose great bounding leaps can carry them clear over the heads of their pursuers. In the fury of the chase the quarry reaches the lip of a broad ravine and flings itself across the gulf, trusting the empty air to break the cheetah’s charge as it had broken so many hunters before. But Chitr Najan does not hesitate at the brink. To the astonishment of every man watching, the cat gathers itself and leaps the ravine entire, rising, in Abu’l Fazl’s celbrated phrase, to a height of a spear and a half as it soars across the void and runs the blackbuck down on the far side.

Akbar, who prized excellence in a living creature as fiercely as ever he prized it in his ministers and his soldiers, could not let such a feat pass unhonoured. He raised Chitr Najan to the first rank among all the thousands of cheetahs in his establishment, making the cat the head of them all, and he decreed that from that day forward a drum should sound before it whenever it was carried out to the hunt. Divyabhanusinh points to precisely these marks of favour, the roll of the drum and the collar set with precious stones catching the hard plains-light, as the surest measure of how exalted a place the cheetah had won within the emperor’s court. And so we are left holding the image of it, an animal drawn from the wilderness by an emperor’s own gentle ingenuity and then lifted up, for one breathtaking moment of impossible grace, into something very nearly a prince of the realm, riding out across the golden plains beneath the beating of drums that once heralded only kings.

There are moments in history when the fate of an entire kingdom folds itself into a single, carefully staged scene, and the morning of 26 February 1792 was one of them. On an island in southern India, inside a great military tent pitched within sight of the fortress walls of Seringapatam, two small boys in white muslin and red turbans were about to walk into one of the most painted, most mythologised episodes of the British encounter with India. They were the sons of Tipu Sultan, and by the end of that day they would no longer belong entirely to their father.

The world around that tent had been unravelling for weeks. Tipu Sultan’s military position had collapsed under the weight of a combined army led by Cornwallis, an army that fused British East India Company troops and British regulars with the allied forces of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Marathas. This coalition had reached Seringapatam on the fifth of February, and in less than three weeks the fighting had effectively burned itself out by the twenty-fourth. Cornwallis, standing before Tipu’s fortified island capital, faced a choice familiar to every commander at the gates of a well-defended city: storm it at ruinous cost, or negotiate. He chose to negotiate, but he attached a condition that cut to the heart of a father’s world. Tipu was to hand over two of his sons as living guarantees, security that he would honour the coming settlement and, above all, pay the staggering indemnity of 330 lakhs of rupees. The formal peace, the Treaty of Seringapatam, would not be signed until the eighteenth of March, which means the children were surrendered first, as collateral for a bargain that had not yet been struck.

What makes this morning so vivid to us across the centuries is that men who were there wrote it down. Major Alexander Dirom and Lieutenant Roderick Mackenzie both published accounts of the campaign soon afterward, and the painter Robert Home actually travelled with Cornwallis’s expedition, sketching on the spot, which is precisely why his rendering of the scene is treated as the most trustworthy visual record we possess. Through their eyes we can still watch the two princes, Abdul Khaliq, the elder, and Muiz-ud-din, the younger, though the sources cannot quite agree on how old they were, some placing them at roughly eight and ten, others at seven and eleven, a small uncertainty that lives inside the original writings themselves rather than in anything added later.

Dirom’s description lets us stand at the tent’s entrance. On that morning the two boys were carried out of the fort on elephants, moving through great pomp as gun salutes thundered from both the Mysorean side and the allied lines. Cornwallis, surrounded by his staff and senior officers, met the children as they dismounted, embraced them, and led them inside with one boy’s hand in each of his own, seating them on either side of himself. They were dressed for the eyes of history, in long white muslin gowns and red turbans, several rows of large pearls looped around their necks, ornaments of ruby and emerald ringed with brilliants hanging from them, and sprigs of pearls glinting in their turbans. It was an image of princely splendour and princely vulnerability held together in the same small figures, and the British artists who came after would linger over exactly that tension.

Then came the line that would echo through nearly every painting made of the event. According to Dirom, Tipu’s chief negotiator, the head vakeel Ghulam Ali Khan, turned to Cornwallis and spoke words designed to be remembered, telling him that these children had been that very morning the sons of the Sultan his master, that their situation was now changed, and that they must look up to his Lordship as their father. Whether or not the sentiment matched the true feeling of the Mysorean side, the declaration handed the British the exact frame they wanted, the image of a conqueror transformed into a benevolent guardian, and it became the emotional pivot on which artist after artist, including Henry Singleton, would build their canvases.

The story did not end at the tent. The princes were not kept at Seringapatam but sent on toward Madras, pausing along the way to visit the tomb of their great-grandfather Fatteh Muhammad at Kolar, before entering Fort St. George on the thirtieth of May 1792 in a formal procession greeted by a garrison salute and full military honours. There they were housed in a fine residence and placed in the care of Captain, later Colonel, Doveton, remembered as a kindly guardian, while Tipu’s vakils Ghulam Ali Khan and Ali Raza Khan stayed close to them. Their captivity was comfortable and remarkably public, a spectacle in its own right, and they were taken to a performance of Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and to amateur theatricals, while on the twenty-ninth of June 1792 Lady Oakley, wife of the Governor of Madras, threw a grand ball in Cornwallis’s honour where the two boys were once again seated on either side of him, the living tableau that painters were, at that very moment, busy translating into oil.

For nearly two years this arrangement held, until Tipu at last paid the indemnity that had bought his sons their freedom and the boys were returned to him, an account drawn from the Madras records placing that homecoming on the twenty-seventh of February 1794, after almost two years within the walls of Fort St. George. Yet the ceremony of embraces and pearls had secured no lasting peace. The humiliation of surrendering both his children and half his kingdom sank deep into Tipu Sultan, hardening an enmity toward the British that would carry forward to the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War and to his own death in the storming of Seringapatam in 1799, the fortress and the family bound together to the very end.

Step back eight centuries to join Ye-lü Ch’u ts’ai on a remarkable journey across the face of medieval Asia. Born in 1190 and serving as a key minister to the legendary conqueror Chinghiz Khan, Ch’u ts’ai accompanied the Mongol army on a sweeping western expedition spanning from 1219 to 1224. This perspective, captured from an abstract of his largely lost memoir, Si yu lu, or “Account of a Journey to the West,” provides a unparalleled look at the geography, cultures, and daily life of a world in profound transition, chronicled by an educated statesman from the former Liao imperial family who himself was taken prisoner at Peking just years before.

The expedition commenced with a rigorous ascent. Leaving Yün chung in April 1218, Ch’u ts’ai first traversed the imposing T’ien shan and the formidable “great stony” and “sandy” deserts to join the Khan’s great camp. The next year, the vast Mongol host mobilized and headed west, confronting the Kin shan range, where masses of ice and snow piled so high, even in mid-summer, that the army was forced to physically cut its passage. Yet, this high wilderness was not just a frozen obstacle; Ch’u ts’ai noted the presence of towering pine and juniper trees and described valleys extraordinarily rich in grass and flowers, with rivers flowing westward to a great lake. Descending from these peaks led them toward the city of Bishbalik, a vibrant Uigur settlement where the traveler encountered an ancient T’ang dynasty tablet identifying the site. He documented the Han hai, a several hundred li expanse—sometimes described as a sea with a bird-filled island—which the expedition itself crossed.

The landscape consistently revealed deep historical layers. South of Bishbalik lay Huo chou, the former Kao ch’ang. Farther west, Wu-duan (Khotan) was identified with the Yü t’ien realm, a land where a notable river yielded both white and black jade stone. After crossing a thousand li and navigating the great desert, the expedition reached the spectacular Yin shan range, stretching immense distances east to west. At its summit, Ch’u ts’ai discovered a massive lake seventy or eighty li in circumference. South of this water lay dense, dark forests of lin kin trees, creating a canopy so thick that the sun’s rays simply could not penetrate.

This forested realm led to a city named for its signature tree. The Western people call a crab-apple a-li-ma, and thus, the city was A-li-ma (Almalik), its surrounding orchards abundant with these trees. Ch’u ts’ai observed that this region was rich in grapes and pears and cultivated the same five kinds of grain found in China. Moving beyond Almalik meant crossing the great Ili River, taking the expedition into the heart of the Si Liao realm and the key trade cities of Central Asia. He visited Hu-sz’-wo-lu-do, the capital of the Si Liao, and Talas, located still further west. The journey then pressed into the cities of the fertile Ferghana Valley. In Ku-djan, people pressed delicious, sour-sweet pomegranates as large as two fists to create a popular beverage. Ba-lan was surrounded by its namesake almond gardens, featuring unique trees with pale, apricot-like blossoms and leaves narrower than those of a peach. At Ba-p’u, the traveler was astonished to find water-melons so massive they weighed fifty pounds each.

One of the highlights of the survey was Sün-sz’-kan, or Samarkand, a stunning and populous metropolis where Western residents interpreted the name itself as “fat,” indicating its remarkable fertility. This is a land of unusual commerce, where gold and copper coins are minted without holes or rims. Ch’u ts’ai described it as a “delicious place,” entirely surrounded by orchards, groves, gardens, aqueducts, springs, basins, and round ponds extending for several tens of li. The water-melons here grow even larger, rivaling a horse’s head in size. He noted that while mulberry trees are present, they are unsuited for silkworm breeding, and he specifically recorded the absence of certain Chinese grains and vegetables. Still further west lay Bokhara, described as even richer than Samarkand, the residence of the Sultan of the Mussulman people. Bokhara sat near the great Amu-daria, which flowed west to a sea. Across this water was Urghendj, home to the Sultan’s mother and a city even more rich and populous.

The furthest travels extended south, into the “strange” and “surprising” lands of Yin-du, or Hindustan. Here, Ch’u ts’ai encountered customs entirely alien to his experience. The writing differed fundamentally from Sanscrit, and the land was dotted with many idols of Buddha. Surprisingly, the people reaped two crops a year but steadfastly refused to kill cows or sheep, consuming only their milk. Snow was completely unknown in this climate. The heat was described as so intense that a vessel of tin placed in the sand would melt immediately, and the very moonlight was said to be as harmful as a summer sun. This is a region of vast sugar-cane cultivation used to create wine and sugar. To the south, a large river, its rapid water as cold as ice, discharged into the southern sea. Paradoxically, moving to the north-west of Hindustan led to the K‘o fu-ch’a plains, a vast region with no hills, cities, or towns. The people here are purely nomadic, breeding massive herds of cattle and horses and creating a fermented beverage from honey rather than grapes. This environment also presented the strange phenomenon of extreme summer days, where the sun rises in little more time than is required to cook a single mutton chop. These observations from Ye-lü Ch’u ts’ai offer a vivid window into the medieval world, where an educated minister for a global empire found a universe of unexpected landscapes, cultures, and natural wonders.

These remarkable color photographs offer a rare window into Central Asia as it existed in a time long gone by, captured more than a century ago, when the vast steppes, mountain valleys, and ancient Silk Road cities still moved to the rhythms of tradition. Most famously, the chemist and photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky first traveled to what is now Uzbekistan in 1907 hoping to observe a solar eclipse from the Tien-Shan mountains. Cloud cover foiled that goal, but the journey was far from lost. Armed with a German-made camera, he wandered the backstreets and ancient centers of Samarkand and Bukhara, capturing scenes unlike any taken before: carpenters at their timber, men grilling meat over coals, locals soaking up the winter sun, and prisoners in Bukhara’s notorious dungeon.¹ He would make three trips to the region, the 1907 eclipse attempt and two more in 1911 after the tsar backed his mission to photograph the Russian Empire, leaving behind more than 200 images of a world little changed for generations.

What makes these pictures so extraordinary is their color, a genuine rarity for their era, achieved through an ingenious method in which each scene was shot three separate times through red, green, and blue filters, then recombined to project a full color image.² The rich reds and golds of embroidered robes, the earthy tones of sun-baked walls, and the deep blues of distant mountains feel startlingly immediate, collapsing the distance of over a hundred years. After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, Prokudin-Gorsky fled Russia and settled in Paris, where he died in 1944. Soon after, the U.S. Library of Congress purchased 1,902 of his images, including the more than 200 shot in Central Asia, from his relatives, preserving forever these portraits of a proud and resilient people.³

Among the holdings of the National Army Museum is a work by the artist Paul Sarrut titled “Groupe des Lanciers Indiens dans une école a Marles.” The piece captures a quiet, human moment from the theatre of war, depicting a group of soldiers of the 15th Lancers, known as Cureton’s Multanis, relaxing on the floor of a classroom.

The setting is a school in Marles-les-Mines, in the Pas-de-Calais region of France. The scene reflects a common practice of the period, whereby schools and other public buildings were frequently requisitioned to accommodate Allied soldiers.

After arriving in Herat, Afghanistan, on 23 November 1971, my plan to drive on to India came to a halt because of the war between Pakistan and India. Stranded in Kabul, I read the Pakistan Embassy’s news bulletin daily to follow the conflict. My visit to Ghazni that winter left a vivid impression on me: from my freezing hotel room I heard the howling of wolves in the night, and the following morning I marvelled at the terra-cotta tile decoration of the two Victory Towers, each standing over forty metres high. These monuments were raised in the 12th century by the Sultans Mas’ud III and his son Bahram Shah, the last of the Ghaznavid rulers, to commemorate their army’s victories.

Seeking a milder climate than wintery Kabul, I spent several weeks in the lowlands of Jalalabad, east of the Kabul gorge, lodging at the Monopoly Club and later the Nangarhar Hotel (the Club, planning a private party with spirits, politely asked me, a foreign observer, to leave). On Christmas Eve 1971 I watched a spectacular sunset, its hues of pink slowly fading over the distant Hindu Kush. My curiosity led me to enter the royal winter palace of Baghi-Chahi illegally through an open back door, only to leave foolishly through the main front gate, where a guardian stopped me and I found myself surrounded by a group of soldiers in ill-fitting uniforms. Feigning ignorance, I asked an English-speaking officer, “Is this a hotel?” He shook his head in consternation and sent me on my way.

Forty kilometres outside Jalalabad, in December 1971, I visited a model farm run by Russian experts who were breeding cattle, where an excellent irrigation system had transformed the arid land into lush green dotted with all sorts of fruit trees, a reminder that Afghanistan’s low rainfall demands artificial irrigation for agriculture. Travel itself was an adventure: I once took the local bus from Jalalabad to Kabul for 30 Afs, and the return journey took four hours as the driver sped over every bump in the winding road. It was a ghastly journey, and when the bus paused at a chaikhana for evening prayers, the scene by the roadside was memorably chaotic, with one passenger being sick into the water ditch while others washed their face and feet downstream and a row of men crouched to relieve themselves. What a scene!

In the far northwest of Uzbekistan lies Karakalpakstan, a huge tract of desert that is, in fact, an autonomous republic. It is theoretically sovereign, with the exception of the right to secession, and political decisions affecting it are made jointly by the Uzbek government and the Karakalpak legislature in the republic’s capital, Nukus. Two thousand years ago, this was a fertile agricultural region, a far cry from the desert it has become after centuries of gradual climate change. Its indigenous inhabitants, the Karakalpaks, were nomadic herders and fishermen who fished not only in the rivers but also in the southern parts of the Aral Sea.

The territory was nominally part of the Khanate of Khiva before being ceded to the Russian Empire in 1873. The Soviets first regarded it as an autonomous part of Kazakhstan, then, from 1936 onwards, as an autonomous state within Uzbekistan. Today Karakalpakstan has a population of 1.8 million, of whom a third are ethnically Karakalpak, a third are Uzbek, and the rest are Kazakh (300,000) and other minorities. The Karakalpaks are ethnically Turkic, with a language close to Kazakh. They are notably secular, eating pork and reputedly making Uzbekistan’s finest vodka.

There are two compelling reasons to travel out into this Wild West of Uzbekistan. The first is to bear witness to the environmental disaster of the Aral Sea. The second is to wonder at how the extraordinary modern art collection of the Igor Savitsky Museum ever made it out here at all.

Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan since 1939, is also the republic’s transport hub. A small, dusty settlement until the 1930s, this planned city grew rapidly after it was chosen as the site of the Soviet Union’s Chemical Research Institute. Its remote position made it ideal terrain for developing and testing chemical weapons, notably Novichok. The institute was eventually dismantled by the United States in 2002. Today Nukus is a fairly unattractive grid of tree-lined streets and mostly post-Soviet concrete, visited by few foreigners save NGO workers, environmental campaigners, and art lovers. For hidden within what is otherwise a desolate cultural wasteland is one of the world’s finest collections of early 20th-century Russian avant-garde art: the Igor Savitsky Museum.

Reaching Nukus from almost anywhere in Uzbekistan is a trial, an unfortunate fact of life. If you are already in Urgench or Khiva, travel by road is feasible; otherwise, the rail and flight options are worth considering. There are two flights a day to Tashkent with Uzbekistan Airways (1 hour 40 minutes; from US50), with onward connections to domestic and international destinations, as well as flights to Moscow twice a week (3 hours 40 minutes; from US150). The airport, refurbished and expanded in 2018, sits 2km northeast of the city at the end of Dosnazarov, and bus number 15 runs the length of Dosnazarov from the train station to the airport.

Bukhara is, in the eyes of many, the undisputed pearl, or perhaps the sapphire, given that its dominant colour is blue, of Uzbekistan. While Samarkand and Khiva have their charms, they seem but pale mirages when one stands on a late autumnal afternoon beneath the Kalyon Minar, the most prominent sight on the city’s skyline, beside the vast and sumptuous 16th-century Kalyon Mosque. Visitors come to Bukhara Province for Bukhara itself, whether drawn to the Ark (the city’s medieval mud-brick citadel with its grisly Registan and prison) or to the buildings of Lyabi Hauz reflected in the gently shifting waters of the tank. Everything is a treat for the eyes, and many spend their entire stay wandering the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town, savouring each sight, sound and smell.

Those who venture further afield are rewarded too. The Mausoleum of Bakhauddin Naqshbandi, outside the modern city’s confines, is considered among the holiest sites in central Asia, drawing huge numbers of pilgrims and admirers of the mazar. Nearby lies the Sitorai Mokhi Khosa, the summer palace of Alim Khan, offering a poignant insight into the last days of the Bukharan emirate before the Bolsheviks took control, as well as the town of Gijduvan, famous for its finely painted handmade ceramics.

The city’s founding is cloaked in mystery, its creation myths as elaborate as the façade of Lyabi Hauz. The Persian epic, the Shahnama, tells that Bukhara was founded by Siyavush, a prince of the Pishdadian dynasty. Falsely accused by his stepmother of seducing her, he survived a trial by fire, crossed the Amu Darya, and wed the princess Farangis, daughter of King Afrosiab of Samarkand, receiving the vassal state of Bukhara as her dowry. Later accused of plotting against Afrosiab, Siyavush was executed before Farangis, his head buried beneath the Ark’s Kalyon Gate as a permanent reminder to the citadel’s residents not to threaten Samarkand’s sovereignty.

Situated near a crucial crossing of the Amu Darya between Merv, Herat and Samarkand, Bukhara was ideally placed to profit from Silk Road trade. It was flourishing by the 6th century BC when sacked by the Achaemenids, becoming a satrapy of the Persian Empire. Its wealth attracted Alexander the Great in 329 BC, followed by the Seleucids, Graeco-Bactrians and Kushans. The city became a centre of worship for the Iranian goddess Anahita and offered refuge to Nestorian Christians and Manicheans persecuted elsewhere. When Arab invaders came in the 7th century, residents initially paid annual tribute, but after 80 kidnapped Bukharans committed mass suicide en route to Medina, Qutaiba ibn Muslim arrived in AD 709 and violently imposed direct control. The city’s celebrated religious diversity was quashed, and as capital of the Samanid dynasty (819 to 1005) it became known as Bukhoro-i Sharif (Bukhara the Noble) and “The Pillar of Islam.”

The 9th and 10th centuries were a golden age. The Samanid ruler Ismail ibn Ahmad moved the capital of Maveranahr here from Samarkand in AD 892, and his patronage nurtured some of the Islamic world’s greatest minds. The physician and philosopher Ibn Sina (Avicenna), the Persian poets Ferdowsi and Rudaki, and the chronicler al Beruni all completed major works in the city. The Samanid fall brought 200 years of attacks: the Karakhanids (AD 999), the Karakhitai (1141) and the Khorezmshah (1206). Most catastrophic was Genghis Khan, whose Mongol horde arrived in 1220, slaughtering all 30,000 troops, torching the city, and killing or enslaving the civilian population. The Great Khan proclaimed himself the “Scourge of God” in the Namazgokh Mosque. When Ibn Battuta visited nearly 150 years later, the city still lay largely in ruins.

Recovery came under the Shaybanids, an Uzbek tribe who established a khanate in 1500. Abdullah Khan II (who ruled from 1583 to 1598) united the Uzbek clans against the Shi’ite Safavids, and artisans captured from Herat were set to rebuilding Bukhara. The city again became a regional religious centre, boasting some 150 madrasas and nearly 300 mosques. In 1747 the Mangit dynasty took power, styling themselves emirs from 1785 to stress their religious credentials. Yet the city struggled economically as maritime routes bypassed central Asia, and its rulers grew notorious for barbarism. Most infamous was “the Butcher” Nasrullah Khan, who murdered 31 relatives to seize the throne in 1826 and was responsible for imprisoning and executing the British officers Conolly and Stoddart during an era of visiting European spies such as Alexander “Bukhara” Burnes.

Following Russian military victories in 1866 and 1868, the emirate became a nominally independent Russian protectorate, and the Trans-Caspian railway linked the city to Russia in 1888. The emirate ended with the Bolshevik Revolution. After Alim Khan orchestrated the massacre of the emissary Kolesov’s detachment and Bolshevik spies, General Mikhail Frunze marched in during 1920, fighting for four days until the Bolshevik flag flew from the Kalyon Minar and the emir fled to Afghanistan. The Bukhara People’s Republic joined the Uzbek SSR in 1924, and the city’s transformation from religious centre to museum city began. Mosques became offices, madrasas became stables, and the population halved between 1917 and 1926. The city was left to decay until the 1950s, when its walls were demolished and boulevards driven through the alleys. However, because most buildings were abandoned rather than destroyed, later restorers were left with ample original material to work with.

In August 2026, a distinctly Central Asian object entered the landscape of the American capital. According to reporting by Luke Broadwater in The New York Times on August 21, 2026, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan donated a set of traditional Uzbek gazebos to the United States, gifts accepted “on behalf of the people of the United States of America.” The structures, the Interior Department’s communications director Katie Martin explained, are “exquisitely crafted aywans,” and visitors will be able to enjoy them later this fall. For a journal devoted to the culture of Central Asia, the arrival of these objects on American soil is a small but telling episode in how the region’s material heritage travels beyond its borders.

The gazebos are destined for West Potomac Park, an area of mostly sports fields near the National Mall. In the days before the report, trucks carrying large boxes bearing postage labels from Tashkent, the Uzbek capital, were seen arriving at the park. As the article notes, parks in Uzbekistan feature gazebos of this kind, distinguished by their intricate, traditional Central Asian woodcarving. It is precisely this ornamental tradition, carried in crates across continents, that gives the gift its cultural weight: it is a piece of Uzbek public and craft culture transplanted into an American civic space.

The significance of the aywans lies in what they represent as objects of craft. Where other recent gifts arriving in Washington—a luxury jet from Qatar, a pair of leopards from Saudi Arabia—are, respectively, an instrument of wealth and a spectacle of exotic power, the Uzbek gazebos are works of artisanship, carrying the woodworking tradition of Uzbekistan’s parks into a foreign capital. The aywan is a familiar fixture of public life across Uzbekistan, and the intricate carving that distinguishes it reflects a long-standing regional practice of ornamental woodwork. To send such a structure abroad is to send a representative sample of that living tradition.

For students of Central Asian culture, this is the salient point. When the crates from Tashkent are unpacked in West Potomac Park this autumn, the American public will encounter an authentic expression of Uzbek ornamental woodcraft—one small measure of how the culture of Central Asia is finding its way to the very heart of Washington. The value of the gesture, read through the lens of art and heritage rather than of the day’s affairs, rests in the object itself: a traditional Uzbek pavilion, crafted in the manner that has long adorned the parks of its homeland, now offered to be seen and enjoyed on distant ground.

Some cities you visit. Samarkand you feel—in the way the afternoon light sets its turquoise domes glowing, in the hush that falls when you step beneath a gilded ceiling, in the strange thrill of standing where Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Amir Timur each once stood. This city of well over half a million people sits at one of the great crossroads of the world, where merchants, monks, soldiers and scholars once passed on the long roads linking China, Persia, India and the Mediterranean. Everyone came, everyone left something behind, and the result is a layered, dizzying place: ancient Afrosiab to the northeast, the leafy Russian quarter to the west, and the Timurid heart beating in between. Samarkand isn’t really one city—it’s several, stacked on top of each other, and half the fun is learning to read the layers.

A little history makes everything come alive. The city began around Afrosiab more than 2,500 years ago; when Alexander the Great arrived in 329 BC, he marveled that it was more beautiful than he’d imagined, then burned its citadel in retaliation for a revolt. By the 7th century it was a glittering Silk Road capital under Zoroastrian rulers, until the Arab conquest of 712 brought Islam and the city’s first mosque. In 1220 came catastrophe—Genghis Khan’s army destroyed it so thoroughly that its canals were said to run red. And yet it rose again, more brilliant than ever, when Amir Timur (Tamerlane) made it his imperial capital in 1370, hauling in the finest artisans from Damascus, Baghdad, Isfahan and Delhi. Ruthless yet passionately devoted to art and science, this single complicated man is the source of nearly everything that makes Samarkand magnificent.

If you see only one thing, make it the Registan, once the ceremonial heart of the medieval city and now a breathtaking ensemble of three madrasas around an open square. The oldest, the Ulug Beg Madrasa (1417–1420), was founded by Timur’s astronomer-grandson and decorated with stars. Facing it, the Sher Dor Madrasa (1619–1636) will stop you in your tracks with its façade of striped tiger-like beasts chasing deer beneath rising sun-faces—a startling burst of figurative art. Between them, step inside the Tilla Kari’s mosque and look straight up: the gilded ceiling seems to soar into impossible depth, though it’s really quite shallow, the most beautiful optical trick in Central Asia. Come at sunset, when the tilework shifts from teal to sapphire to gold.

A short walk away rises the vast Bibi Khanym Mosque (1399–1404), in its day the largest on earth, wrapped in legend: an architect who fell in love with Timur’s wife and demanded a kiss to finish the work, then paid with his life. Built at the very edge of medieval engineering and shaken by an 1897 earthquake, what you see now is largely a modern reconstruction—but no less awe-inspiring. Nearby, prepare yourself for Shah-i Zinda, an avenue of tombs so densely tiled it feels like walking through a jewel box. Its name means “Living King,” for a cousin of the Prophet said to have been beheaded while praying, then to have picked up his own head and vanished into a well where he lives still. Many tombs were built for Timur’s wives and sisters, each a different shade of blue—bring your camera, but also just stand and let it wash over you.

Then there is the Gur-i Amir, Timur’s own mausoleum, its ribbed melon-dome an icon of the skyline. Beneath a crystal chandelier and onyx-panelled walls lie the markers of Timur, his sons and Ulug Beg, Timur’s own a single slab of dark Mongolian jade. Here’s a story to raise the hairs on your neck: legend warned that disturbing his tomb would unleash war—and when Soviet scientists opened his grave on 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union within hours. Don’t miss the nearby Observatory of Ulug Beg, where, working before the telescope existed, he charted over a thousand stars and calculated the length of the year to within about a minute of today’s figure. His enemies destroyed the observatory (and his own son had him beheaded), but the great curved arc of his instrument survives, and his star catalogue was eventually published at Oxford.

Give yourself time to wander past the headline sights. Climb to the Hazrat Hizr Mosque for sweeping views from a spot once occupied by a Zoroastrian temple. Seek out the Mausoleum of Daniyar, revered by Muslims, Christians and Jews alike, where an 18-metre sarcophagus honors a legend that the prophet Daniel’s leg keeps growing, and a sacred spring and ancient pistachio tree stand nearby. For a quieter, older Samarkand, visit the surviving Gumbaz Synagogue in the former Jewish quarter—a reminder that this has always been a city of many faiths and languages, where you’ll still hear Tajik spoken widely alongside Uzbek and Russian.

Samarkand isn’t a museum; it’s a working city, and its best experiences are often the everyday ones. Dive into the Siyob Bazaar beside the Bibi Khanym Mosque, piled high with fruit, nuts and the city’s beautiful round bread. Watch silk carpets being knotted at workshops where natural dyes grow in the garden, look for suzani embroideries (pomegranates for fertility, peppers against the evil eye) and the blurred patterns of ikat silk. In the evenings, madrasa courtyards host traditional dance and the haunting classical music known as shashmaqam, said to have been born right here—and if you visit in an odd-numbered August, the Sharq Taronalari festival fills the Registan with sound. Sit down to eat in a painted 19th-century room and order a glass of the local red wine with your plov.

A last word of honest advice: much of what you’ll see has been heavily restored, especially during the Soviet era, but this doesn’t diminish its beauty—it simply means you’re looking at a city that has been loved, lost and rebuilt many times over. Think of Samarkand as overlapping worlds—ancient Afrosiab, the Timurid masterpiece, the Russian colonial town, the Soviet capital and the modern tourist city—all sharing the same ground. Don’t try to tick off every monument in a single frantic day; linger in a courtyard, get pleasantly lost in the bazaar, watch the domes change color as the sun sets. Come for the blue domes, and stay for the feeling that you’ve stepped into the beating heart of the Silk Road—because that’s exactly where you are.

There are towns you pass through, and there are towns that pass through you. Karakol, cradled at the eastern tip of Kyrgyzstan’s Lake Issyk-Kul beneath the snow-hung wall of the Terskey Alatau, is emphatically the latter. It is a place where Russian gingerbread cottages line quiet, tree-shaded streets; where apple orchards perfume the air each autumn; and where the great central Tian Shan rises just beyond the last row of houses, promising glaciers, hot springs, and some of the most spectacular high-mountain trekking on earth.

A Frontier Built on a Checkerboard

Karakol’s story begins in the 1860s, when a Tsarist military garrison scouted the eastern shore of Issyk-Kul and found what soldiers rarely do: paradise. Mild climate, rich soil, valleys full of hot springs, mountains full of promise. The town was formally founded on 1 July 1869, laid out — as the surveyors of the age loved to do — in a neat European checkerboard of streets. Its early population skewed heavily toward officers, merchants, professionals, and explorers, and that cosmopolitan, frontier character lingers to this day.

The very name carries the marks of its people. Kara-Kol — “black hand,” or “black wrist” — is said to recall the hands of the immigrant Russian peasants, stained dark by the valley’s fertile earth. In Soviet times the town was renamed Przhevalsk, after the explorer Nikolai Przhevalsky, whose final expedition ended here and who lies buried by the lakeshore just outside town.

A Living Gallery of Faiths and Architecture

For the art and architecture lover, Karakol offers two unmissable treasures, each a monument to the town’s remarkable ethnic mosaic of Russians, Kyrgyz, Dungans, Tatars, and Uyghurs.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is a handsome wooden Orthodox cathedral, its poplar-and-brick silhouette rising once more against the sky after decades of neglect. An earlier church here fell in the 1890 earthquake; the graceful wooden cathedral that replaced it in 1895 was stripped of its domes and pressed into service as a club under the Bolsheviks — before being lovingly restored to worship. On a still Sunday morning, its chimes carry across the town.

A few blocks away stands the Dungan Mosque, and there is nothing else quite like it in Central Asia. Built between 1907 and 1910 by a Chinese architect and twenty Chinese artisans for the local Dungan (Hui Muslim) community, it looks for all the world like a Mongolian Buddhist temple — a riot of upturned eaves and painted fruit-and-flower motifs — and was, astonishingly, assembled without a single nail.

For the historian, Karakol’s Regional Museum, housed in a sturdy colonial brick mansion, rewards a slow visit: Scythian bronze artifacts, ancient petroglyphs from near the lake, a candid record of Kyrgyzstan’s union with Russia, and photographs of the old town before the poplars grew tall.

The Sunday Market: Central Asia’s Great Theatre of Commerce

If you come for one thing, come for the Sunday bazaar — one of the last truly great weekly markets in Central Asia. The animal market (mal bazari) in particular is pure spectacle: for several blocks, the ground fills with people from across the region and an array of creatures “you won’t see even in Bishkek.” Horses, cattle, sheep, and more change hands in a swirl of haggling, dust, and centuries-old ritual. Arrive early — trading starts around 5 am and is winding down by 10.

Karakol has quietly become the headquarters of a new kind of tourism, and geography explains why. It is the finest base on the entire lake for reaching the central Tian Shan. From here the great routes fan out — toward the Inylchek Glacier and mighty Khan Tengri, into the red-rock canyons of Jeti-Öghüz, and up the lush Jergalan valley, tucked into eighty hectares of woods and meadow with its hot mineral baths. Nearer at hand, the beaches, dachas, and gentle waters of Pristan Przhevalsk offer the softer pleasures of a lakeside summer.

Everywhere, apple orchards, white poplars, and the ever-present ridgeline remind you that in Karakol, town and wilderness are never more than a short walk apart.

Among the many figures of the Mughal dynasty, Aurangzeb ‘Alamgir is remembered above all for his austerity—the pious emperor who abstained from wine in accordance with his faith. Yet the historical record preserves a quieter, more human habit: a genuine and lasting fondness for coffee. This detail, drawn from the daily bulletins of the Mughal court, offers a rare glimpse of the emperor’s private tastes and of the place coffee had come to occupy in the life of the palace.

The evidence rests on the akhbarat, the Mughal court news reports that recorded the routines and doings of the imperial household. The historian Munis D. Faruqui, whose 2026 study Aurangzeb ‘Alamgir and the Mughal Empire: A History Retold draws heavily on this archive, had already documented the emperor’s coffee-drinking in his earlier work, The Princes of the Mughal Empire, 1504–1719 (Cambridge, 2012). There, while reconstructing the morning routines of Mughal princes, Faruqui suggests that Aurangzeb likely acquired his taste for coffee during his first term as governor of the Deccan between 1636 and 1644.

Two specific court records anchor the claim. A 1695 entry in the Akhbarat-i Darbar-i Mu’alla (vol. 19, p. 462) shows Aurangzeb drinking coffee, and a 1705 report (vol. 30, p. 51) records the deputy-governor of Bijapur sending the emperor a gift of coffee beans. The dates are significant. By 1705 Aurangzeb was in his mid-eighties and still campaigning in the Deccan, the very region where he had first taken up the habit some seventy years earlier—evidence that this was no passing experiment of youth but a preference sustained across an entire lifetime. That a provincial official judged coffee beans a fitting gift for his sovereign suggests, too, that the emperor’s taste was well enough known at court to be relied upon.

Seen in this light, Aurangzeb’s coffee habit is more than a curiosity. Coffee had by the seventeenth century travelled from the highlands of Yemen through the ports of the Indian Ocean to become both a commodity of trade and a luxury of the court. In the single cup taken each morning by an aging emperor on a distant frontier, the wider geography of the early modern world and the intimate texture of one man’s daily life quietly meet.

There is a kind of object historians overlook precisely because it was never meant to survive—cheap, functional, discarded by the thousand. Yet when such a thing endures, it often tells us more than the marble and bronze we so dutifully preserve. The tika chaap—the small, chromolithographed paper label once glued to bolts of Indian cloth—is exactly such an object. To understand it, one must grasp the strange geography that produced it: raw cotton picked in the Deccan and Gujarat, shipped to the mills of Lancashire, woven in Manchester, and sent thousands of miles back to be sold in the very land where its fibre had first been grown. The label sat at the end of this long circuit, at the precise point where a foreign commodity had to persuade an Indian buyer.

Herein lies the fascination. A Lancashire mill owner knew nothing of the visual grammar of a customer in Surat or Madurai; he could not stamp his cloth with a British crest and expect it to sell. The bale had to speak a language the bazaar could read. And so the chaap became an act of cultural translation—an English commercial impulse forced to borrow an Indian vocabulary of images. Lakshmi on her lotus promised prosperity to the household that bought the cloth. A maharaja lent the borrowed prestige of a court. An elephant seized the eye; a steamship, trailing its improbable ribbon of smoke, whispered a promise of modernity. Each was a small argument, assembled by men who had never heard the word “branding” yet grasped its essence completely: that we buy not objects, but the feelings we attach to them.

What makes the story wholly human is what happened next. These labels were designed to be discarded, yet people kept them—peeling them away with care, pressing them into scrapbooks, and, most tellingly, setting the images of Lakshmi and Saraswati upon their household shrines, where a commercial label became an object of genuine devotion. A picture printed in Manchester to sell muslin ended its life receiving prayers in a home on the Gangetic plain. The buyer, it turns out, was no passive dupe; he took what the empire offered and remade it on his own terms. The empire designed the label, but India decided what it would become.
